Mac & Cheese Please

Grand Rapids, MI— This Thursday after finishing Behind The Mitten’s segment with Neal Dionne on Wood Radio’s West Michigan Live, Gonzo invited me along on his journey to find the mitten’s best Mac and Cheese for MLive’s Michigan’s Best series.

He has the awesome yet difficult task of finding the very best mac and cheese the state has to offer. I only say difficult because there are so many good ones out there. But lets be honest, eating home made mac and cheese all day would certainly fall into the category of dream job for most of us.

I accompanied Gonzo to his first of stop of the day which was HopCat in downtown Grand Rapids. HopCat is known for it’s mac and cheese as well as the number of yummy toppings you can put on it. Gary Boyed, HopCat’s ringleader, crunched the numbers and came up with 1000 different combinations for a ‘build your own’ four topping mac and cheese.

The traditional mac and cheese was great. Their signature sauce is made with white American cheese, munster and just a hint of beer to give it a little something extra. We also tried one with chorizo, marinated tomatoes and spinach that was very good, but the third and last combo was my personal favorite. This one had grilled chicken, bacon and jalapeño. Talk about comfort food.

Gonzo has now visited 21 of the 30 restaurants that were nominated for MLive’s search and will continue to sample the rest until next week! Stay tuned for the top ten list on Nov. 19th.

You can keep up with his travels and drool at the all of the delicious Mac and Cheese on twitter (@MichiganGonzo) and through MLive at http://www.mlive.com/dining/#incart_highlight
