Grand Rapids, MI- One of the things I love about Michigan is that any given day you can find some kind of wacky event to participate in. Most of these occur outdoors and celebrate something great about Michigan. Festivals celebrating asparagus or mint. An ice fishing derby. Cardboard sled races. I love the creativity that communities tap into when they come up with these events. One of my favorite events that I went to last year is happening again this weekend, on November 14 in Traverse City.
The Great Beerd Run run is held at Grand Traverse Resort, the area’s premier resort. When you first hear of this event you going to think, “oh it’s just another 5K run”. This is not just another 5k. This is a 5k where the whole point of the run is to run to ANOTHER BEER. Sponsored by Short’s Brewery, Right Brain and Beard’s Brewing, each mile marker has not just water, but a different beer for you to try. As you run through the beautiful golf course of the resort, wearing a knitted beard hat, you can chat with fellow beer fans about your favorite. At the end of the “race” Joe Short himself might high five your finish and give you your “medal” that’s actually a very nifty bottle opener.
Tickets are still available and are $40. There are also special room rates at the resort. You get a knitted beard hat, BEER, and that bottle opener. You also get the satisfaction of both having run a race on Saturday, as well as drinking by 10am. I call that winning all the way around.
Also on Saturday, you can join Gonzo and I at Treetops Resort in Gaylord. This fall, we participated in raising money for the Van Andel Institute through their Hops for Hope program. Special beers at breweries and restaurants statewide were designated “purple beers” and 1$ from each pint was donated directly to the Institute to help in their fight against cancer. We joined Treetops in early October at Saugatuck Brewing Company, where their food and beverage director, Gabe Bober, brewed up a special edition beer just for Treetops.
On Saturday, Treetops will be having a special “happy hour” release party where you can try Gabe’s creation, called the “double down IPA”. Starting at 4pm, join Gonzo and I and drink beer to fight cancer. Treetops also is offering special room rates for this weekend if you’d like to join us. This is a one time beer, not to be missed. They will also have 5$ limited edition Hops for Hope growlers, special beer inspired food, and of course, plenty of beer. Behind the Mitten will be representing, join us!
