East Lansing, MI- We were super excited to be able to travel to East Lansing this week and help celebrate the opening of Ellison Brewing Company. Owner/Brewer Todd Schwem had told us of his plans last year when we visited him at his previous job at Kuhnhenn Brewing Company. His brews there were spectacular and so we couldn’t wait to see what he would create at his own place. We are happy to report that the beers at Ellison are equally awesome!
Located in East Lansing, in an industrial setting, Ellison also plays off their location in Michigan’s capital city. Look at these sweet hand carved handles! Ellison brews up some really interesting beers, each one is solid and well brewed. We had a crazy Watermelon Hefeweizen, that had a nice twang to it and tasted a bit like a Jolly Rancher on the exhale. Sloppy Seconds was their hoppy session ale. I loved the Pasadena Pale, which was loaded with Cascade hops and as the menu says is as “refreshing as winning the Rose Bowl”.
We picked our beer of the week after doing a taste test of 4 different amazing stouts that the boys had brewed up. We tried the Big Bend Banana, the Hazelnut Coffee, the Tirimisu and the Mudslinger. Both John and I agreed that the Mudslinger was absolutely fantastic. It comes in at mean 10.75% ABV, and had a sweet, creamy, cocoa base with big notes of roasted grain and vanilla with a great creamy mouthfeel. Our pick for beer of the week, the Mudslinger from Ellison Brewing. -Amy Sherman
